SMSWeather Terms of Service:

  1. SMSWeather is a free service operated by Dumm Software LLC that provides weather forecasts via text message (SMS). If you choose to use this service, you may fill out the above sign-up form to receive the phone number, then send a text message to that phone number requesting a forecast. SMSWeather will respond with a series of messages containing the requested forecast information, immediately and in direct response to your request. SMSWeather will never send messages to you without receiving a forecast request first.
  2. You can cancel the SMS service at any time by refraining from sending any further text messages to the SMSWeather number. You can also text "STOP" to the service phone number. After you send the SMS message "STOP" to us, we will send you an SMS message to confirm that you have been unsubscribed. After this, you will be formally unsubscribed and will no longer receive SMS messages from us. If you want to join again, you may text "START" to begin receiving SMS messages from SMSWeather again.
  3. If you are experiencing issues with the messaging program you can reply with the keyword HELP for more assistance, or you can get help directly at will@dummthings.dev.
  4. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages
  5. As always, message and data rates may apply for any messages sent to you from us and to us from you. You will receive one to six text messages in reply to any text message you send to SMSWeather. If you have any questions about your text plan or data plan, it is best to contact your wireless provider.
  6. If you have any questions regarding privacy, please read our privacy policy below.
  7. This service may become unavailable at any time. There is no guarantee that data provided is correct or reliable. If you choose to use this service, you accept that it's at your own risk.

Introduction:

SMSWeather sends weather forecasts by text message (sms). Forecasts available include:

If a message names no forecast type but has a valid location, the default forecast type is noaapoint.

It is also possible to receive commercial fisheries announcements. Text adfg kodiak salmon to receive the most recent kodiak commercial salmon fisheries announcement. By default this message will not include anything following the words 'As previously announced'. To receive the full announcement, text adfg kodiak salmon full. You may also request earlier announcements. For example, adfg kodiak salmon earlier will return the last announcement, and adfg kodiak salmon earlier 2 will go two announcements back.

Forecast locations:

You must provide a location corresponding to the type of forecast being requested. A marine zone forecast requires a NOAA marine zone, for example pkz138 for Shelikof Strait. A TAF or METAR requires a (capitalized) ICAO airport code, for example PADQ. Point forecast locations can be specified by

Response Format

The requested forecast will be returned as a series of usually 1-6 text messages, depending on the length of the forecast. If you're using a satellite messenger like an Inreach, beware that this service can use up your monthly message quota quickly!

Each forecast request will be assigned an uppercase or lowercase letter, and each message in the response will start with that letter, followed by the message number and the total number of messages in the response. Sometimes messages get received out of order, and this system allows you to figure out the correct order of the response. In case you send multiple requests before receiving all pending responses, the identifying letter will allow you to distinguish between messages containing unrelated forecast responses.

Named locations:

The map below shows location names (pinned locations) that will be recognized in messages. To name a location on the map, click the location, enter the name, and press enter. You will be asked to choose a different name if the name you enter is already in use, too short, or contains spaces or adjacent numbers. Once a location is named on the map, the only way to remove it is to email me. You can also name locations by texting save [location-name] [location].

For example save coolplace 19.72 -155.58.
